Cuero's Gobblers will challenge Hidalgo's Pirates for the area baseball title Friday and Saturday in Alice

The first game will be Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Alice High School stadium. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Cuero will be the home team.

Game two will be Saturday at 2 p.m. and Hidalgo will be the home team. The third game would follow 30 minutes after that game if needed.

The Pirates are 18-9 and were the runner-up team in District 32-3A.

According to Gobbler baseball coach Scott Holder, the Pirates are familiar with post season play. Although they did not make the play-offs last season, they reached the regional finals three years ago playing Yoakum.

This season they have beaten some of South Texas' better teams including Rio Hondo and Falfurrias.

“They play with a lot of confidence,” said Coach Holder. “I think they are a good team and they hit the ball really well. Their top of the order has some really good players. They are three deep in pitchers.”

“It is key for us to have good support,” he added. “We've had good backing by our fans all season.”

While the Gobblers will be battling the state track meet which is also on Friday, Coach Holder noted, “We want to urge everyone to come out and support us Saturday.”

Concerning this play-off, Holder stated, “Defensively they match up with us pretty well but I feel our offense is stronger. We just need to play our game the way we've played all year.”

The Gobblers earned a bye last week after taking the district title with an undefeated record. The last time the Gobblers went undefeated in district was in 1996.

This year the Gobblers are 28-2-1 and are ranked in the top five of Class 3A.
