   Sophie Marie Grant, 81, of Cuero passed peacefully from this life into her Heavenly life on Thursday, May 23, 2013. Sophie fought a courageous battle against cancer with hope, faith, and determination. 
   She was born Oct. 23, 1931 in Placedo to the late Frank and Mary Janis. Sophie married O.G. Grant on April 19, 1949 in Bloomington. She worked at Tandy Brands in Yoakum for 34 years. Sophie enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, and trying new recipes. She remained active in her ranching endeavors. GiGi, as her great-grandchildren called her, was always quick with hugs displaying her fun loving personality. Sophie was a devout member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Her smile and caring ways will be missed by all who knew her.
   She is survived by her daughters, Doris Peters (Carrol) of San Antonio and Shirley Womble of Cuero; son, Jerry Grant of Cuero; sister, Mary Vanek of Victoria; eight grandchildren, Traci Peters Royal (Chris) of San Antonio, Brandon Peters (Sara) of Portland, Ore., Sam Womble (Sarah) of Bandera, Valerie Womble Vick (Jason) of Jourdanton, Adam Womble (Bridgett) of New Braunfels, Kelly Grant Young (Andrew) of Victoria, Crystal Grant Ross (Johnny) of Spring, and Cindy Grant of Cuero; and 16 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Martha Janis and Elizabeth Janis; brothers, Louis Janis, David Janis, and Frank Janis.
   Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Friday, May 24 at Freund Funeral Home. Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father David Berger officiating. Interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery.
   Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Peters, Sam Womble, Adam Womble, Jason Vick, Johnny Ross and Andrew Young.
   The family extends their sincerest thank you to Emeritus at Lincoln Heights, San Antonio and her wonderful caregivers, Vangie and Vivian.
   Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
