Alex Villafranca, incoming junior at Cuero High School, won gold in the 800 meter run at the National Qualifier track meet held at the D.W. Rutledge Stadium (Judson High School) in Converse on June 27. With this win she will be competing in the AAU Junior Olympics held in Detroit, Mich. July 27-Aug. 3.
Villafranca ran the 800 meter in the time of 2:31 which is just off from her best time of 2:29.60.
Villafranca described the race, “We started in a waterfall start instead of the staggard lane. I was in second almost the whole race. At the last curve I passed the girl, which is something not usually done, and then, there was just the straight-away. I still had more in me so I think I could have run faster but we were competing for place and not for time. When I passed the girl I never looked back.”
