Dear Editor,
There is a situation developing that has me a bit puzzled. The people of DeWitt County and the city of Cuero voted Republican by a significant majority in the last several state and national elections.
The Republican Party, as we know, is anti-socialist, anti-labor, anti-market regulation, and espouses the principles of capitalism and the free market. Not too long ago Republican officials were excoriating President Obama for not having negotiated more trade agreements.
Now that talks are underway about a trans-Pacific trade agreement, the citizens of Cuero and Dewitt County are mounting a drive, including petitions, to stop the negotiations so as to save Mt.Vernon Mills, a major employer in the county.
I wonder how many of the signatures on the petitions belong to Republican voters. Is this a case of “Be careful what you ask for because you might get it,” “My ideology is fine as long as it hurts someone else, but not me,” or is there some other explanation?
