During warm up at the Cuero Competition gym on Aug. 27, San Antonio Cole Lady Cougars looked powerful and fast. #12 was hitting hard but it was not long after, when practice was over that the Lady Gobblers shut down the Lady Cougars in three games.; 25-12, 25-21, 25-9.

“Head coach of the Lady Cougars, Torie Maldonado said, “I don’t know what happened.”

The Lady Gobblers played as one. They were no longer intimidated with the hard hitters.

“Coach Rebecca Riojas-Fryer said, “I told the girls, ‘Don’t be intimidated’ and they weren’t.’ We have seen some hard hitters like that but I told them that they need to put their arms out and dig all night.”

Justyne Turner tore up the floor as she stopped the Lady Cougar’s serve and #12’s attempt to score. Kaelin Seivers and Mia Knetig served in the holes for more aces than a deck can hold. Martina Stavinoha and Autumn Means guarded the net all night. Missy Odom was there to make the kill shots along with Mary Kate Kruegar and Emmarie Johnson.

Assistant coach of the Lady Cougars, Sheila Bannon said,  “This was not our night. They did not play their game.”

“[Our girls] really stepped up,” said Coach Riojas-Fryer. “We started aggressively and made it hard for them to pass the ball.”

The Lady Gobblers will travel to Altair Aug. 29 and 31 for the Rice Tournament and will be in Wharton on Aug. 30.
