Members of the Lavaca-DeWitt German Club went to the DeWitt County court house to witness the signing of the proclamation that Oct. 6 is German-American Day.

According to the proclamation Germans were among the first settlers of the United States seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Settlement began as early as 1683 with the arrival of German Mennonites in Pennsylvania.

The first permanent settlement of Germans in Texas was in the 1830s in Industry, in the Austin Colony.
