It was called “the Glory Years.” Cuero’s Gobblers went 54-2 between 1972-75 winning two state championships and 44 games in a row.

Friday, Nov. 1, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Cuero Heritage Museum, 124 E. Church Street, the public is invited to view the newest addition to the Gobbler Football Exhibit - the glory years of 1972-75.

A reunion of those champion teams will be recognized at Friday’s game at Gobbler Stadium between Cuero and Gonzales.

Gobbler head coach Buster Gilbreth who guided the teams during those glory years is expected to attend this week’s reunion.

I became a varsity cheerleader my sophomore year for the ‘73 football season and I was issued new cheerleader shoes with a uniform before the season began. Like so many, I had high hopes for the upcoming football season. We all felt like we were winners and we were out to prove it that year. We never looked ahead. We focused one game at a time. Week after week we were winning and before I knew it we went 15 games and won state.
