How did The Cuero Record come to be a “Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper?” The answer is Ken Towery. 
 
Back in the early 1950s, this former WWII Corregidor POW survivor, after returning from the war and battling Tuberculosis, came looking for a better job to support his family. Towery went to work as a reporter for the Cuero Daily Record, and on a chance question from a local citizen, helped to uncover a scandal in the Texas Veterans Land Program. 
 
Towery published a series of articles on the scandal, earning him the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Distinguished Local Reporting in May 1955.
