All over town, trees are exploding with color and green is a welcome change. Thirteen historic trees in the streets look healthier and more splendid since the City of Cuero and the Tree Board came to their rescue. This began as an initiative from Keep Cuero Beautiful.

After three devastating years of drought in South Texas, the trees were experiencing tremendous stress especially the historic oaks growing in the streets. The fact they had survived years of asphalt was testament to their will. Their ancient, gnarled branches had been here long before the town was established.

KCB saw these trees as a local treasure and a unique feature worthy of saving. The first step was to ask neighbors of these trees if they would adopt them. Many people agreed they would help pay for trimming and treated them. But when we inventoried them, there were 14, far too many without neighbors, who could afford the expense.
