The Lady Gobblers continue to make their presence known when they appear on the court and they continue to decide that nothing less than a win will do.

The Cuero volleyball team traveled to Vanderbilt on Aug. 26 to play against Industrial Lady Cobras. In five heated matches the Lady Gobblers came home with the win.

Cuero coach Whitney Coles said, “Industrial is a fantastic team. They are scrappy and disciplined. It was an exciting game to watch.”

In preparation of the game Cuero had some notable injuries. Mia Knetig was unable to practice which changed the dynamics going into the first game.

“Our pace on offense was very slow due to a change of lineup,” Coles said. “I challenged them to push through and play as if nothing was different. Mia played in the game, but not having the practice we were at a different tempo.”

Cuero lost game one 20-25. They came back to win game two 26-24. Going into game three Industrial took the lead 2-9. The game ended with Cuero losing 26028.

Coles said, “We fought hard to come back but Industrial had so much momentum built up we could not get rolling.”

Game four the Lady Gobblers were more challenged due to injuries than the Lady Cobras winning 25-9.

“Due to injuries we had several girls come off the bench and step up huge for us. Autumn Gamez played amazing defense as well as Jaslynn Mathis. It is awesome to know that no matter what is going on, the girls can come in and step up with the team not losing a beat,” Coles said. “Both teams were tired but we talk a lot about heart and mentality and I told them they had to decide that they wanted to win. They did just that,” Coles said. “It would have been easy for the girls to revert back to the tipping team we once were but we dug deep and went full throttle with our offense. Monster kills came from Mary Kate Krueger. Martina Stavinoha, Kaelen Sievers, and Missy Odom really got us rolling. On top of defensively we were digging everything. Kaelen and Martina put up mega blocks and shut down Industrial’s big hitters so our momentum was unstoppable at that point.”

In game five things were a little different. Each team went point for point until the score was 8-8. A time out was called.

Coles said, “We talked about finishing strong and really digging our heels in to make the statement we wanted to make. We have some incredible athletes whose desire to win is a fun thing to be a part of. I am very proud of them.”

Stats: Autumn Gamez, 1 kill, 1 blk, 3 digs; Mary Kate Krueger, 12 kills, 2 blks, 7 digs, 2 aces; Missy Odom, 5 kills, 3 blks, 8 digs, 1 ace; Martina Stavinoha, 25 kills, 8 blks, 1 asst, 7 digs, 1 ace; Lauren Parker, 20 assts, 2 digs; Kaelen Sievers, 11 kills, 5 blks, 2 digs, 2 aces; Jaslynn Mathis, 6 digs; Mia Knetig, 5 kills, 19 assts, 2 aces; Justyce Turner, 28 digs; Tory Littles, 4 kills, 2 blks, 3 digs.
