The Cuero Gobblers (1-0) will face the Gonzales Apaches (0-1) on Sept. 5 in Gonzales. The Gobblers are 9-1 over the Apaches. Last year, Cuero won 28-20. The only loss occurred in 2011 with a score of 28-0.
Gonzales played Giddings and lost 35-52. Cuero played Wharton and won 33-20.
Gonzales played deep last year losing in the state quarterfinals under coach Ricky Lock. This year the Apaches will be under new head coach Kodi Crane.
Under the new coach comes a new philosophy. According to area reports Gonzales will be running out of a spread offense; four wide receivers and one running back. They plan to mix it up 50/50 in terms of run plays to pass plays.
Defensively, the Apaches will run a 4-2-5 defense. Area reports say that it was the same defense ran last year with the exception of the secondary. Safeties will be in the box and covering pass.
Cuero’s team offense averaged 432 yards per game with a total of 260 yards rushing and 172 yards passing.
