Cuero prepares for Yoakum game Friday

 

The Cuero Gobblers (4-1) will face the  Yoakum Bulldogs (2-3) on Oct. 18 in Yoakum. This will be the 103rd time these two teams have met. The Gobblers lead this series 66-30-6 .
 
Cuero played Giddings last Friday and won 24-20. Yoakum played Smithville and won 29-19. 
 
Cuero is 7-2 against Yoakum in the last nine years. The last two years Cuero lost in close games 28-21 in 2012 and 25-21 in 2011. 
 
The preseason/season statistics are as follows. Cuero’s team offense averages 356 yards per game with a total of 1188 yards rushing and 592 yards passing.
 
Yoakum’s team offense averages 437.3 yards per game with a total of 1233 yards rushing and 516 yards passing.

Freshmen win first district game

The Freshman Gobblers squeaked by Giddings Oct. 10 away winning their first district game 36-30. The Freshman Gobblers are 5-1 overall.

 
Scoring for the Gobblers were Colton Blackwell, 2 TD; Wyatt Andrews, 2 TD; and Tyler Edwards 1 TD and 2 runs for the 2-point conversion; Garrett Veit pass for the 2-point conversion.

Cuero JV team undefeated

 

The JV Gobbler football team played away at Giddings Oct. 10. The Gobblers won 22-7 keeping their undefeated record of 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the district.
 
Cuero was able to move the ball effectively both on the ground and in the air. The offensive line played great providing running lanes and great pass protection.
 
Scoring for the Gobblers were Jareed Edwards, Elex Martinez, and Rodney Evan.

Nordheim keeps fighting

 

Nordheim traveled to face Kenedy for the first time this year and lost in four.
 
In game one the Lady Pirates had a slow start losing 12-25.  In game two Nordheim got out of neutral and won 25-23. In games three and four Nordheim lost 19-25.
 
Nordheim coach Randy Castillo said, “Overall, we had a very good night. Our decision making, hits, and defense were on mark and we competed. I was proud of the girl’s fight and will to win.”  
 
Nordheim will have played Austwell-Tivoli on Oct. 15.
Castillo said, “Last time we went to five games with them. It should be another close and fun game.”

Wildcats lose first district game

 

It was not what Yorktown head coach Ty Robinson expected when the Wildcats lost their first district game against Three Rivers 36-6 last Friday night.
 
“I really thought that we were going to win this game,” said Robinson and it was easy to see why.
 
In the first quarter Yorktown got the momentum started. The kick-off squad forced Three Rivers to fumble and Yorktown recovered at their own 30 yard line.

Cats to host Ganado Indians

 

The Yorktown Wildcats (2-4) will be playing Ganado (4-2) at home Friday, Oct. 18.
 
Yorktown is coming in with a loss against Three Rivers (4-2) with a score of 36-6 while Ganado will be coming in with an open week. Their last preseason game they played Louis and won 55-0.
 
Ganado is 3-0 against the Wildcats. Last year the score was 21-0 and in 2011 it was 55-19.

Goebel inducted into Gobbler Hall of Fame

 

Cuero High grad Brad Goebel (1986), distinguished Baylor Bear football and NFL quarterback was inducted into the Cuero High School Gobbler Hall of Fame during Friday's game against Giddings. He is shown here with his family receiving the plaque from Gobbler Booster Club president Jode Zavesky.

Gobblers take district opener

Cuero's Gobblers came from behind to take the district opener 24-20 over Giddings' Buffaloes here Friday night. After being down 17-20, D'Anthony Hopkins scored from 35 yds. out to gain the lead and the Cuero defense insured the win.

Friendly rivalry between schools keeps respect on the court

 

The Lady Pirates played the Kitty Kats at home Oct. 1 with both teams ending the first round of district games. Yorktown beat Nordheim in three games.
 
In game one Yorktown came out hard to set the pace. Thirty two kill shots were attempted with only 12 successful. Some of the attempts for Yorktown, they were trying too hard where the ball went out of bounds. Other attempts made were picked up by Nordheim’s Alyssa Leister and Brittny Bernier. Several volleys were played but Nordheim could not deliver. Kats won 25-12.
 
Game 1 Yorktown stats: Mandi Henderson 1 kill; Victoria Pena 1 ace, 1 kill; Shelby Franke 3 kills; Sam Niemeier 1 ace, 3 kills; Emily Gwosdz 1 ace, 4 kills. Yorktown team stats: 18 for 24 serves 32 attempts for 12 kills.
