8th grade Kitty Kats take 2nd at Nixon Tournament

The Yorktown 8th grade Kitty Kat basketball team traveled to Nixon Dec. 7 for a basketball tournament and finished in 2nd place. The Kats defeated Nixon-Smiley then lost in the championship game to Karnes City. Pictured from bottom left are  Jessica Garcia and  Alexis Longoria. Kitty Kats squeek by taking opening district win

 

The Yorktown Kitty Kats (1-10) had their opening district game against the Kenedy Lady Lions (2-14) at home Jan. 3. The outcome of the game did not occur until the last 23 seconds on the clock with the Kats squeaking by for a 39-36 victory.
 
The first period Kenedy started with the lead 6-9. The Kats attempt to score kept rimming out and the Kenedy defense were more intense.
 
The second period the Kats offense were making some good plays. They did well with anticipating one another but still struggled to get the ball in the basket. The half ended 10-15.

Lady Pirates take Cowgirls 42-31

 

The Nordheim Lady Pirates played against the McMullen County Cowgirls away in Tilden Jan. 3. 
 
With a definitive win over the Cowgirls 42-31, the Lady Pirates are now 8-8. They will be playing their first district opener against Prairie Lea away on Jan. 8.

JV Kats defeat the JV Lady Lions

 

The Yorktown JV Kitty Kat basketball team opened District play at home on Friday, Jan. 3 at home by defeating the Kenedy JV 22-14. The Kats, playing with only 5 players due to the holiday absences, overcame a 3 point halftime deficit. This was the third game where the Kats came from behind in the second half for the win. 
 
Stephanie Mattox led the Kats in scoring with 8 points, followed by Annie Ochoa with 6 points.  Kelsey Lynch and Halle Martin chipped in 4 points each. Megan Guerrero added rebounds and defense to secure the victory. 
 
The JV Kats overall season record stands at 4-3 with a district record of 1-0.

Gomez, Bone overall winners in Jingle Bell 5k

The Cuero Wellness Center sponsored the Jingle Bell 5k and Junior Jingle Jog Dec. 14. The race started on the 200 block of East Main Street.

Matt Gomez was the overall male winner and Amber Bone was the overall female winner. Tamisha Farmer was named the best dressed.
 
In the male, ages 13 and under group, Austin Chavez placed first, William Carbonara placed second and Corben Fournet placed third.
 
In the male, ages 14 to 19 group, Tom Vandeveer placed first, Zachary Fuchs placed second and Brandon Estiola placed third.

CHS grad Ervin Thomas named to all-decade team

FRISCO – The Southland Conference, as part of its year-long 50th anniversary commemoration, has announced its all-decade football team from the 1990s. The team includes outstanding student-athletes from its member institutions from the 1990 season through 1999.
 
A total of 89 former student-athletes made up the 1990s All-Decade Team, including honorees from each of the 10 institutions that were football members at during that period. The Southland continued to undergo membership change during the decade, developed the Southland Football League as a result, and maintained its status as a collective power in NCAA Division I-AA.
 
Ervin Thomas, a graduate of Cuero High School and Texas State University, was named offensive lineman to the all-decade team.

Lady Gobblers lose Weimer game

Martina Stavinoha led the team scoring 9 out of 10 shots for a total of 19 points and a total of 11 rebounds but that was not enough for the Lady Gobblers as they fell short 42-61 against the Weimar Lady Cats on Dec. 16 at home.

Cuero had to overcome some obstacles early with Kaelin Sievers injured before the game and Missy Odom injured just before ending the first half. The Lady Gobblers maintained their game right up until the fourth period.
