The Truck and Tractor Pullers Association held their 2013 Championship Pull Nov. 8-9 at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio.

Attending the championship pull was Cuero’s own Thomas Watson with his tractor “Rattical Abomination.” He was a qualifier as he was in the top five in the economy rod class.

Prior to competing in the economy rod class, Watson had been competing at the antique tractor pulls for nearly eight years.
Watson said, “I used to go to the pulls with my dad when I was younger. It is kind of an interesting deal.”

Kitty Kats get stung by Lady Hornets

The Kitty Kats certainly felt the sting of the Lady Hornets but that did not stop the Kats from playing to the end even in their loss of 25-66.

Yorktown girls basketball head coach Bruno Mata said, “I know that the score indicates one thing [but] I think we are very competitive especially the way we played today. We never gave up.”

The Kitty Kats played at home Dec. 3 against Louise who were quick to the tempo and were more skilled at handling the ball.

“We were out-hustled and we were out of shape,” said coach Mata.

Cats take back win from the Louise Hornets

Unlike the first meeting against Louise losing 48-60 on Nov. 26, the Wildcats were smooth and fluid in their offense and nearly shut down the Hornets defense at home on Dec. 3 winning 60-25.

Yorktown boys head basketball coach Scott DeMarco attributed the change to a recent visit on Monday.
“The last thing these boys saw was [Skylar] Wilson dead on the floor,” said coach DeMarco.

On Nov. 14, Skylar Wilson quit breathing during practice. Wilson was resuscitated by the aid of three coaches, Ty Robinson, Scott DeMarco, and Lane Shands. Wilson was eventually transported to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi where he underwent heart surgery.

Lady Pirates Take championship

The Lady Pirates have done something that Nordheim has not seen in years and that was to play for the championship on their own court.

Kevin Wilson, superintendent of Nordheim School said, “It would be nice that we win the championship rather than watching someone else win on our own courts.”

Nordheim held the Nordheim basketball tournament Dec. 5-7. The Lady Pirates played Kenedy first, beating them 52-35. In their second game they played Nixon-Smiley and won 49-35. The Lady Pirates were to play Prairie Lea for the championship game.
