For most who grew up in Cuero, the thrill and honor of suiting up in the green and white is the last time they will get to live the dream of playing the game we all love, football. With the start of the South Texas Amateur Football League’s second season, several former Gobblers will get that chance once again.
Founded in 2008 by Eloy Vera Jr., S.T.A.F. began with humble beginnings. The Wolverines, based out of San Antonio were founded out of Vera’s need for a new hobby. By the end of the inaugural season, S.T.A.F. had grown to four teams.
The overwhelming success of the first season, has led to the expansion of the league from four to twelve teams, including one of the leagues’ newest franchises, the Cuero Gobblers. Vera remains humble however, despite the sucess of the first season.
“I’m not looking to be the next NFL, I only want to be S.T.A.F., with teams with professional players,” said Vera. “Who play for the love of the game.”
The Cuero Gobblers will be one of the league’s eight expansion franchises in 2009, and are owned by Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Basquez.
Coaches have been selected for the new season, and include head coach: Elvin Ko Jack Johnson, and assistant coaches: Robert Hopkins, Roy Green, and Wayne Mathis. Team representative is Adam Wasserman. Lane Insurance, Smolik’s, and Freund Funeral Home have all signed on to help sponsor the Gobblers this season.
So far, the Gobblers have a 34 man roster, with one practice left for new players to sign up.
S.T.A.F. plays with NFL rules with the exception of one foot in bounds. The clock will be a 15 minute running quarters with a 2 minute warning before halftime and fourth quarter.
The Cuero Gobblers have a benefit game scheduled in January at the Hunt Elementary Field. All proceeds from this event will go to the Cole Pargmann Scholarship Fund.
The first regular season game for the Gobblers will be December 19th against Floresville. The public is reminded that this Sunday will be the final sign-up day for the season, and practice will begin at 9:00 a.m. and 4 p.m.
