Christmas in the Park opens Monday
 (Posted 11/18/2009 08:49 am)
In spite of vandalism damage to three popular lighted scenes, the 10th anniversary of Christmas in the Park will begin Monday with drive through tours beginning at 6 p.m. at Cuero Municipal Park.
It will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. daily through January 1.
There is even some promising news from December Events Committee President Kay Lewis. One of the key scenes destroyed by vandalism was a 37-ft American flag but the committee has placed an order for a replacement flag. Mrs. Lewis said they are hoping it will arrive here in time to be on display by December.
Unfortunately, the popular riverboat scene which was also damaged will be taken down before next week’s opening.
Still there are about 120 displays that make up Christmas in the Park. Last year the six week long event saw about 23,000 vehicles tour the park. That represents somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 people.
There is no charge to drive through Christmas in the Park but local volunteers will be available at the exit to take donations that are used to perpetuate the event.
Reward offered
Quickly after the vandalism of the larger Christmas in the Park scenes on Nov. 8, donations were made to create a $2,500 reward to help find the person(s) responsible for the damage.
Cuero Police Department has stepped up day and night patrols at the park and has distributed information about the reward at local schools.
Sgt. Jay Timpone is conducting the investigation and notes information can be called in to the Department’s Crime Tip Hotline at 361-275-5555 or emailed to cueropd@gvec.net.
