Peggy Elder Miller
(Posted 11/26/2009)
Peggy Elder Miller, age 72, of Corpus Christi died November 18, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.
Peggy is survived by: her devoted and loving husband of 50 years, Donald L. (Don) Miller; daughters Leslie Miller-Brooks of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and Katherine Sieczkowski of Corpus Christi; sons-in-law, Nigel Brooks and Keith Sieczkowski, grandsons, Brandon and Bennett Sieczkowski and Oliver Brooks; and brothers Donald Elder (and Betty Jo) of Victoria and Patrick Elder (and Karyn) of Cuero and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews. Her older brother Fletcher Elder died in 1999. Peggy was born in Nixon, Texas, November 29, 1936, and was the second child of the late J.F. and Annie Lee Brown Elder of Cheapside, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas-Austin in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism she married her valentine Lt. Donald Leslie Miller of Austin, Texas February 14, 1959.
Peggy was an active member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church and choir, the Kitchen Angels, and the Newcomer Commission.
Having lived in Corpus Christi since 2006, Peggy and Don moved here from Victoria, where she had previously served as a publicist for the University of Houston-Victoria and later in her own public relations business. She was active in the leadership of the St. Francis Episcopal Church (serving on the Vestry and as Senior Warden), Victoria Adult Literacy Council, the Victoria Rotary Club, the Victoria Democrats Club, and the Crossroads Progressive Women of which she was a founding member. She was elected to two terms as representative of District 18 to the State Democratic Executive Committee.
Before her husband’s retirement from the Air Force in 1981, Peggy supported her family first as a fulltime homemaker and later as a secretary and professional staff person in the public and private sectors. The Miller family moved many times—from Georgia to Indiana, to Wisconsin, California, Colorado, South Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia. Making a new home and many new friends in a new place was Peggy’s continuing challenge, and the local church was always her refuge.
A memorial service celebrating Peggy’s life will be held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 3026 S. Staples, Corpus Christi, on Saturday November 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the All Saints Episcopal Church Choir Fund, attention Choir Director, 3026 S. Staples, Corpus Christi, 78404.
