Open late in December
Shop until 8 p.m. Thursdays in December till Christmas. Shop from 5-8 and register for $100 in Cuero Bucks each week. Follow the Gift Trail for participating merchants. Sponsored by the Cuero Business Co-Op.

Nativity scene at Park
A live nativity scene continues at Christmas in the Park in Cuero from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Tuesdays and from 7 to 9:15 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Hosting it will be First Baptist Church, Wed., Dec. 16; Lifeway Baptist Church, Thurs., Dec. 17; St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Fri., Dec. 18; volunteers, Sat., Dec. 19; First United Methodist Church, Sun., Dec. 20; St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Mon., Dec. 21; and volunteers, Tues., Dec. 22.

CAMAL House dates
C.A.M.A.L. House will be open to distribute food on the second and third Thursdays in December. The December dates include Thursday, Dec. 17, form 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Shopping safety tips
Parents and interested citizens are invited to hear Michael Marr, Cuero Independent School District Resource Officer, speak about safety during the upcoming holidays on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Officer Marr will give tips on shopping safety, keeping your children out of trouble during the holidays and other safety issues parents encounter during the holiday season. The public is invited to attend this free program which will be held at the Gobbler Getaway (formerly the Cuero High School cafeteria) from 11:45 – 1:00 noon. Snacks will be provided as well as babysitting and transportation. Please call 275-9408 for more information.

St. Michael’s pageant
St. Michael’s School will present their annual Christmas pageant on Wednesday, December 16th at 10:00 a.m. and on Thursday, December 17th at 7:00 p.m. Both performances will take place in the St. Michael’s Parish Hall. This year’s pageant is “Christmas in the Country,” a musical which proves that through the power of prayer, all things are possible. Everyone is invited to join us for this heart-warming presentation.

Men’s groups to break
The Arneckeville Men's Breakfast Group will take a Christmas break during December and will resume its schedule Jan. 5 of meeting for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Arneckeville. All men of the community are invited to attend in 2010, the first and third Tuesday each month.

Country Opry Dec. 17
On the third Thursday of each month Cuero Pilot Club hosts the Cuero Country Opry at the VFW hall, Highway 183 North. The next performance is Thursday, Dec. 17. Dinner (catered by Werner’s of Shiner) is served at 5:30; the show follows at 7:00. Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased in advance from any Pilot Club member, the Cuero Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, Full-O-Pep Ranch & Garden Center, Prosperity Bank, Kleinecke Flower Shop or Reuss Pharmacy. Tickets for just the show are $5.00 at the door. Takeout dinners are also available from Werner’s for $6.00. For more information call Kay at 275-6334.

Play set for Dec. 17
Take a waltz down memory lane. The new Musical Theatre class will present “A Circle of Four” written and co-directed by Sharon Ernster with musical direction by Heather Turk. The short play traces the friendship of four girls from 1969 through 1994. Tickets are available at the door. Adults $5, all students free. It will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, in the High School Cafetorium.

Garbage holiday schedule
Cuero City Hall and Administration Offices will be closed Thursday, Dec. 31, and Friday, Jan. 1, for New Year’s holidays. The sanitation collection schedule will be: Monday and Tuesday’s routes will remain the same; commercial routes will be picked up Wednesday along with Thursday and Fridays routes added. The Citizens Collection Center will be closed Saturday, Jan. 2. After the start of the new year, the Citizen Collection Center days of operation will be Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday.

Baptist Christmas service
First Baptist Church in Cuero invites the public to celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, at 6 p.m. A service of Christmas carols, Scripture reading, choirs, handbells, and candles will be held in the church Sanctuary and is open to all.

Golf Association tourney
Cuero Golf Association will hold its annual membership tournament on Sunday Dec 20 at the Cuero Municipal golf course. Tee time is 1:00 p.m. and please sign up before 12:30 p.m. The tournament format will be a scramble. Following the tournament there will be a meeting to elect Cuero Golf Association directors followed by a meal.

Candlelight services set
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cuero will hold candlelight services on Christmas Eve, December 24, beginning at 4:00 p.m. and again at 11:00 p.m.

Auxiliary plans party
Ladies Auxiliary to the Cuero Volunteer Fire Department will met at Kimberly Bothe’s home at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, for the Christmas party.

Cubs plan toy drive
On Saturday, December 19th, the Cub Scout Pack 241 and Boy Scout Troop 241 will be taking cash donations or new toys in their Blue Santa Toy Drive for Toys for Tots. The toy drive will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Christmas Cantata Sun.
On Sunday, December 20th, at 10:30 a.m., the Christmas Cantata “A Great and Mighty Wonder” by Fettke, will be presented at the First Presbyterian Church of Cuero. The following soloists for the Cantata: Octaviano Campos, Kenna Neitch, and Janet Bateman. The narrorator will be Milt McLeod with Beverly Cheshire as the choral director/organist. All are welcome to attend.

Go Texan Chili Friday
DeWitt County Go Texan Committee will be having another chili fundraising event on Friday, Dec. 18, at the Friar Ag Center in the Cuero City Park, between 5:00-8:00 p.m. The chili will be $8 per quart and will be “to go” only. This fundraising event is being held to help offset the costs of youth and adults participating in the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Go Texan contests, which in turn benefits the local scholarship program. Project Grad supper Thurs.
Project Graduation Supper at Milly’s on Main will be held this Thursday at 5-7 p.m. The meal will feature a soup, sandwich, dessert, and drink. Advance tickets are $7.00 available at BBQ Station or call Tammy Bitterly at 275-6023.

Diabetic Support Group
Diabetic Support Group meets the second Thursday of each month at First United Methodist Church located at 211 N. Clinton from 10 to 11.

Biggest Loser 3
Register now for the Wellness Center’s Biggest Loser 3 competition. Weigh-ins will be held January 1-8, 2010. Kickoff is 1/7/10 at 7 p.m. The event will last for 8 weeks and will have lots of motivators to keep you on track. Ministers meet weekly
Pastors and church leaders are invited to join Cuero Area Ministerial Alliance which meets each Monday at Cuero Assembly of God at 8 a.m. for an interdenominational time of prayer and fellowship.

Vietnam Vet names needed
Anyone serving in the military during the Vietnam crisis between the years of 1962-1975 regardless of station, please notify Rev. John Jackson at 361-275-1207 or email him at Jacksoncuero @yahoo.com or the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce (361)564-2661 to have name inscribed on the DeWitt County Vietnam Memorial to be constructed in Yorktown.

Vietnam Vet brick project
Vietnam Vets are selling bricks for $50 each to be installed at the Vietnam Memorial which is to be constructed along SH 72 across from Aunt Di’s in Yorktown. Bricks will be inscribed. Contact Rev. John Jackson at 361-275-1207 or any Vietnam Vet for more information or to purchase a brick.

Tamale orders
Pre-sale tamales will be available for December 19 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall starting at 8:00 a.m. Tamales will be $8.00 per dozen. Also at the Parish Hall will be a Bake Sale and Garage Sale also starting at 8:00 a.m. For pre-sale tamales call Josephine at (361) 275-6470.

Flag football sign-up
Yoakum TAAF adult men's flag football league will begin on January 9. A league meeting will take place at Fat Albert's BBQ & Icehouse in Yoakum on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. Teams interested in joining the league should call Mike McCracken at 361-655-2909 or 361-293-7278. Games will take place in the Yoakum City Park on Saturday's.

Christmas Tree Forest
Yoakum Heritage Museum’s 22nd annual Christmas Tree Forest continues through Jan. 4 with over 65 uniquely decorated trees by local and area businesses, schools, clubs, and organizations. The theme is “Dreaming of a White Christmas.” Located at 312 Simpson Street, it is open Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1 to 4 and Fridays from 10 to 4. Vets holding a raffle
Vietnam Veterans are selling raffle tickets for a Golden Boy .22 rifle LR at $5.00 each to raise money for the Vietnam Memorial to be built along SH 72 across from Aunt Di’s in Yorktown. Tickets may be purchased from any Vietnam Vet. The drawing for the rifle will be Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Volunteers needed here
Caring volunteers are needed for rewarding work as advocates for nursing home residents. Ombudsmen visit nursing homes to promote quality care and to protect resident’s rights. Free initial and ongoing training is provided and no prior experience is required. Volunteers are needed in DeWitt county. Vietnam Vets memorial
Anyone knowing of an individual killed in action in Vietnam, call the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce (361)564-2661 with the person’s name, date of birth, date killed in action so their name may be inscribed on a headstone at the DeWitt County Vietnam Memorial to be constructed in Yorktown.

Census job training
For those interested in Census 2010 jobs, testing will be in Cuero on Wed., Dec. 16, at Cuero Library at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Cuero Library, 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Supervisory testing date will be Saturday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. at Cuero Fire Station. Applicants may also call toll free 1-866-861-2010 to schedule a testing date.
