
The Cuero Lady Gobblers are set to open district play this Friday against the 18th ranked Yoakum Lady Bulldogs. Lady Gobblers add wins over break, ready to open district play

Despite being out of school for the past two weeks, the Cuero Lady Gobblers stayed busy over the holiday break, playing games against Wharton, Karnes City and Poth, before making an appearance in the championship game of the Lady Flyer Holiday Classic.
December 15, saw the Lady Gobblers in action against Wharton. Cuero played a tough hard fought game, coming away with a ten point victory 51-41 to push their season record to 7-5.

Friday, December 18, found the Lady Gobblers on the road to take on a tough Karnes City squad. The Gobblers knew the game would be tough and the final score was indicative of that, as Karnes City edged Cuero 53-51, dropping the Lady Gobblers record to 7-6.

Following the loss to Karnes City, the Lady Gobblers took on the Poth Lady Pirates on December 22. Cuero was overmatched from the beginning, finding it tough to get things going. In the end, Poth took the win 63-33 to drop the Lady Gobblers record back to .500 at 7-7.

To round out 2009, the Lady Gobblers took part in the Lady Flyer Holiday Classic in Victoria. Cuero got off to a hot start in the tournament picking up a win in their opening game against St. Andrew’s Episcopal. The Lady Gobblers took home the eleven point win 49-38 after getting double digit scoring from three players.

After picking up a win in the opening game of the tournament, the Lady Gobblers played two contests on December 30, against host St. Joseph and then Brazos. In the first contest against tournament host St. Joseph, the Lady Gobblers used good second half defense to take another double digit victory 42-32. With the win, the Gobblers stood just one victory away from playing in the tournament championship.

After dropping two contests to start the winter break, the Lady Gobblers had one two straight to get their record back over .500 at 9-7. A win over Brazos would put them in a tournament championship game, and a win was just what they got, cruising to a 48-24 victory. The contest saw eight different Lady Gobblers score.

The championship game of the Lady Flyer Holiday Classic saw the Lady Gobblers matched up against the red hot Nixon-Smiley Mustangs, who entered the game on a sixteen game win streak. The play was physical, and the defense that Cuero exuded against Brazos was reciprocated by Nixon-Smiley. After trailing 27-12 at halftime, the Lady Gobblers were stifled in the third quarter and held scoreless. Nixon-Smiley won took the tournament title with a 44-20 win over the Lady Gobblers. At the end of the tournament, Kelsey Washington was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Season Record: 10-8
The Lady Gobblers will open up 2010 action on Tuesday on the road against Smithville. On Friday, Cuero will open up district play against the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs who enter the contest ranked number eighteen in the 3A state rankings.
