Gobbler basketball splits games, prepares for district opener Friday
 (Posted 1/13/2010 08:26 am)
After playing in the Rice Tournament just before the New Year, the Gobblers played their first action of 2010, and their first home game of the season on January 5, against Stockdale.
Starting five for the Gobblers included: Monte Green, Austin Lind, D’Colby Green, Lamar Holeman, and Mason Blaschke.
The Gobblers got off to a hot start in their first home game, taking a 14-8 lead after one quarter, and extending that lead to 29-16 at halftime. Stong defense out of the Gobblers in the first helped Cuero build their 13 point lead.
Stockdale’s haltime adjustments made for a closer second half, with the Gobblers only outscoring Stockdale by three points in the second half. However, it was not enough to overcome the first half lead that the Gobblers built. Final score before the home fans saw the Gobblers on top 63-27.
Lamar Holeman had his best offensive production of the young season, and Monte Green recorded his second double/double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Holemen and Mason Blaschke both recorded five assists.
“Overall our defense is getting better,” said Coach Collin Toot. “We’re still learning our transition from defense to offense, but we are much better in handling the press.”
Scoring line: Monte Green 18, Austin Lind 12, Lamar Holeman 10, Mason Blaschke 9, D’Colby Green 4, Zack Zuck 4, Aaron Bell 2, John Garcia 2, Jonathan Ybarra 2.
Friday January 8, found the Gobblers back on the road to take on the LaGrange Leopards. Opposite of their start against Stockdale, the Gobblers fell down early 14-4 to the Leopards. The press from LaGrange really bothered the Gobblers in the first quarter. After slowing down the final three quarters, the Gobblers tried to climb back into the game, only being outscored by six in the final three quarters. Final score however, saw the Gobblers on the losing end 65-49.
“The team got down early and just couldn’t get back into the game,” said Coach Toot. “After the first quarter, we settled down and played with them, we just couldn’t make up the difference that we spotted them in the first quarter.”
Scoring Line: D’Colby Green 16, Zack Zuck 15, Lamar Holeman 7, Aaron Bell 6, Mason Blaschke 3, John Garcia 2, Austin Lind 2.
This week the Gobblers travel to El Campo on Tuesday before opening district play at home against Goliad on Friday night.
