Gobbler basketball opens district play with close loss to Goliad
 (Posted 1/20/2010 08:33 am)
The Cuero Gobblers opened up their district campaign on Friday night, dropping a close contest to Goliad 53 - 47 after battling back into the game in the second half. Earlier in the week, the Gobblers came up short against El Campo 64 - 44.
Tuesday, the Gobblers hit the road to take on the El Campo Rice Birds. The Gobbler’s shooting was cold in the early going, and Cuero fell behind 15-6 after one quarter and trailed 33-14 at halftime.
The boys came out of the halftime locker room with a newfound intensity and really picked things up. Better defensive play led to better shooting, allowing the Gobblers to cut the Ricebird’s lead down to just eight points. Over the final four minutes however, El Campo got on a 14-2 run to put the Gobblers away for good.
“The boys just need to come out and play four quarters,” said Coach Toot. “We’re getting better and finally will be at home Friday when district play starts.”
Scoring Line: Monte Green 12, Austin Lind 12, D’Colby Green 11, Aaron Bell 5, Mason Blaschke 4.
Friday night, the Gobblers finally returned to their home court to open district play against the Goliad Tigers. In a complete turnaround from the El Campo game, the Gobblers came out with hot shooting taking an early 7-0 lead. Goliad’s perimeter game was also hot early, as the Tigers hit five 3 - pointers in the first quarter and eight 3 - pointers on the night.
In the second quarter, the Tigers solid shooting continued, while the Gobblers went cold. At halftime, the Tigers controlled the game with a 29-18 lead. The third quarter saw the Gobblers get back on track with a few defensive stops to cut the lead to seven at 40-33 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Cuero cut the lead to just two points, but Goliad outscored the Gobblers 14-13 in the fourth quarter to preserve the 53-47 victory.
“I thought we played with some heart tonight, we went cold in the second quarter and couldn’t get any stops,” said Coach Toot. “They had the outside and inside game working early and it was enough to hold us off.”
Scoring Line: Monte Green 17, Austin Lind 7, Aaron Bell 7, D’Colby Green 6, Mason Blaschke 4, John Garcia 2.
This week the Gobblers are back on the road to take on Gonzales on Tuesday night, and the Edna Cowboys on Friday.
