Arndt gives Bobcats lift off bench against UH
by COY SLAVIK, Record Managing Editor
(Posted Today 10:49 am)

Cuero grad Tyler Arndt takes off on his 15-yard touchdown run Saturday night against Houston. HOUSTON - If Tyler Arndt was nervous, it sure didn’t show.
The former Cuero Gobbler made his collegiate debut Saturday night and was one of the few bright spots for the Texas State Bobcats in their 68-28 loss to the Houston Cougars.
Arndt ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in leading the Bobcats to all four of their touchdowns after coming off the bench to replace starter Tim Hawkins in the first quarter.
“I was more the past two days than we I actually got there,” said Arndt, who drove the Bobcats 80 yards in 10 plays and scored on a 15-yard run on his first series. “It just came to me.”
Arndt’s touchdown run pulled Texas State within 13-7. But head coach Brad Wright opted to go back to Hawkins in the next offensive series.
“It’s different rotating on and off,” said Arndt, who completed 14 of 22 passes with one interception for 153 yards. “You get cold sometimes. But you learn to adjust to it. That may be how it is all year. You never know.”
Wright said he will evaluate game film this week to determine Saturday’s starter against Southern Ar-kansas.
“Tyler made some mistakes early, but it seemed like he settled in,” Wright said. “He moved us down the field quite a bit.”

Panthers keep Gobblers winless
(Posted Today 10:45 am)

Cuero running back Trent Jackson (27) takes a handoff from quarterback Mason Blaschke during Friday night's contest against the Liberty Hill Panthers at Gobbler Stadium. The scene Friday night was all too familiar for Cuero head coach Rick Owens.
Just as a week earlier, Owens watched his Gobblers commit costly turnovers that they could not overcome in falling 36-28 to the Liberty Hill Panthers.
The Gobblers (0-2) were plagued by three lost fumbles and two interceptions. Just as in its 49-42 season-opening loss to Wimberley, Cuero fell behind in the fourth quarter and tried a last-gasp rally but fell short.
“To quit on these guys would be a big mistake because you can see what they’re capable of,” Owens said after the loss. “We just have to do a better job as coaches to make sure the players execute the little things.”
The Gobblers went up 7-0 in the first quarter on quarterback Mason Blaschke’s 1-yard touchdown run. But Liberty Hill (2-0) reeled off 20 straight points to go up 20-7 late in the third quarter.
Cuero’s Aaron Bell caught second-half touchdown passes of 30 and 39 yards from Blaschke as the Gobblers pulled within 28-21 with 2:17 left in the game. But after a failed onside kickoff try by Cuero, Panthers quarterback Blake Thompson ran 40 yards for a touchdown.
Trent Jackson, who had 131 yards rushing on 14 carries, raced 57 yards for a touchdown with 1:43 remaining.
But Cuero failed again on an onside kickoff attempt and the Panthers ran out the clock.
“I think our defense played really good,” Owens said. “We’d make some big stops and then a penalty would kill us. Our kids kept fighting. You can’t fault our kids. We just have to cut out the little errors.”

Gobblers next face Liberty Hill
by COY SLAVIK, Record Managing Edfitor
(Posted 9/1/2010 09:51 am)
The Cuero Gobblers tried as hard as they could Saturday to forget about the Wimberley Texans and get their minds on the Liberty Hill Panthers.
Cuero head coach Rick Owens said his players came back just 12 hours after their 49-42 season-opening loss to Wimberley committed to correcting mistakes and focusing on Friday’s 7:30 p.m. matchup against Liberty Hill at Gobbler Stadium.
“They came in here and worked hard and were very attentive,” Owens said about Saturday’s team meeting. “We came out and ran and lifted weights. They all have a good attitude about it and I think that’s just a credit to them. We tell them that the most important play is the next play and the most important game is the next game. We told them to put Wimberley behind them and get ready for Liberty Hill.”
The Panthers opened the season with a 34-14 win over Leander Rouse. Owens said his team will have to be sharp to come away with a victory Friday night.
“They are very well-coached,” Owens said. “They come off the ball hard on their offensive and defensive lines. Their head coach is a defense coordinator and he has a good scheme. They’re going to be a tough ballgame.”
Owens was happy with his offense’s big-play ability against Wimberley, but said he strayed away from the original game plan as the Gobblers committed turnovers and blocking miscues.
“After watching the film, we saw that it wasn’t just one spot,” Owens said of the offensive mistakes. “We kind of took turns messing up. Actually the plays that didn’t work, we should have came back to them more and more and more, instead of getting away from them because we were right there.”

Cuero sees home win streak snapped by Wimberley
(Posted 9/1/2010 09:48 am)

Cuero's Monte Green goes up to make a touchdown catch just 17 seconds into Friday's game against Wimberley. First-year Cuero head football coach Rick Owens said Saturday that he didn’t get much sleep after Friday night’s 49-42 season-opening loss to the Wimberley Texans.
The fourth-ranked Gobblers saw their 33-game home win streak snapped in a see-saw battle after committing four turnovers and costing themselves a touchdown on the second-half kickoff due to a penalty. Still, Owens said the Gobblers left Saturday’s team meeting determined to bounce back Friday against Liberty Hill.
"We watched the film and it wasn't as bad as it looked," Owens said Saturday. "We made some mistakes. On defense, we had plays where one guy is out of position and it threw our whole defense out of its schemes. It's nothing we can't fix. It's time to go back to work."
The Gobblers will host the Liberty Hill Panthers on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Liberty Hill defeated Leander Rouse 34-14 last week.
Cuero junior running back Trent Jackson, who rushed for 126 yards on 16 carries, scored his second touchdown of the night on a 17-yard run that tied the game at 35-all with 8:52 left in the contest.
But Wimberley took the lead for good with a 4-minute, 29-second touchdown drive that ended on quarterback Brady Lambert’s 19-yard touchdown run. After intercepting a Mason Blaschke pass, the Texans scored again with 3:26 remaining on Dennis Smith’s 5-yard run to go up 49-35.
Blaschke, making his first varsity start at quarterback, ran 21 yards for a touchdown with 37 seconds left. But Wimberley preserved its victory by recovering Cuero’s onside kick attempt.
The Gobblers went up 7-0 with only 17 seconds elapsed in the game. Cuero recovered a Texans fumble at the Wimberley 25 on the opening kickoff and Blaschke threw to a leaping Monte Green in the end zone for a touchdown on the next play.
Wimberley scored touchdowns on its next two possessions before Jackson dashed 35 yards for a score to tie the game at 14-all. Green returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown 1:44 later as Cuero regained the lead at 21-14. But the Texans, who held the ball for 69 plays compared to the Gobblers’ 48, added two more touchdown marches before halftime to go into intermission with a 28-21 advantage.
“We didn’t have the ball a whole lot of plays,” Owens said. “We’d like to have about 60 plays, but that’s just a credit to their offense. They didn’t gash us with the big play, but they held on to the ball.”
After Green had an apparent touchdown on the second-half called back due to a penalty, Cuero regrouped and tied the game again on Blaschke’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Bell.
Wimberley answered with 43 seconds left in the third quarter on Smith’s 3-yard touchdown before Jackson’s second scoring run knotted the game once more at 35-all.
Jackson had an earlier run of over 40 yards negated when he was stripped of the ball from behind and the Texans recovered the fumble.
“We made some mistakes blocking and had some penalties, interceptions, and fumbles,” Owens said. “Those things hurt us, but I think we can learn from those mistakes.”
