Gym coach looks for new facility

Dear Editor,
As I prepare to return home from my 17th USA Gymastics National Championships, instead of being able to celebrate another successful year with South Texas Elite Gymnastics, I am being forced to focus on having to close the gym down in Cuero after 12 successful years.
The reason that STEG is having to close its doors is because we are being evicted from the building that we have operated out of for the past 12 years. Two years ago we had new landlords take ownership of the building the gym is in and shortly there after they doubled the rent that we had been paying for the past 10 years. They also promised to make improvements to the building and fix pretty serious issues the building has had for quite sometime. We have paid them the increased rent every month but two years later the building continues to get worse. There are many issues with the building but one of the main concerns is the fact that everytime it rains water pours into the building. This has damaged equipment and caused mold and mildew to accumulate. Due to low enrollment in the summertime, we were not able to pay the full rent for July. This was the first and only time in 12 years this has happened. While I was at nationals, I received a call from home saying that we were left an eviction notice at the gym giving us only until Aug. 1 to be out of the building.
This is a really sad thing for children of several communities in the area. Over the years STEG has served athletes from as far away as San Antonio and all the towns in the Crossroads area. We have produced a national champion for 12 years in a row and have even taken athletes to international competitions. I have tried for over three years now to figure out a way to keep this level of program in the Cuero area. I have contacted everyone possible in the Cuero area to try and help. We were given a piece of land that would have changed this whole situation but placing the gym in this location was voted down. My goal has always been to finish out my coaching career in Cuero but at this point it is not looking like that is a possibility. We are very sorry to those of you and your children who love and depend on the gym. I feel like I have tried everything in my power to keep this gym open. If anyone has any ideas on how this might be possible that I may have over looked please contact me at 361-218-6148 as soon as possible. You also can add South Texas Elite Gymnastics and Cheer on Facebook if you are interested in the outcome of this situation.
I would like to say thank you to all of our supporters throughout the years. Thank you for sharing your children with us. Many of you and your athletes have given me memories that will last a lifetime. I would also like to thank God for allowing the gym to survive for the time it has. My family and I have been through some pretty challenging times over the past 12 years and everything I have been able to accomplish would not have been possible without the help of Jesus Christ.
Thank you all and God bless.
