Gonzalez backs ICE
On Wednesday, July 18, 2018, Congressman Filemon Vela was given a chance to stand with the men and women of ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and Border Patrol. Instead, Vela voted with Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters to support democrats’ call to abolish ICE. I wholeheartedly disagree with Vela. Most folks in our district disagree with Vela.
A border patrol officer supporting the TSA [Transportation Security Administration] at the Harlingen airport told me two weeks ago, “You know, I wish people would stop thinking that we are the bad guys!” When the men and women of ICE and Border Patrol go to work, they keep us safe. In 2017 alone, ICE rescued 1,422 victims of human trafficking. Nearly 127,000 arrests made by ICE in 2017 removed criminals from our streets; criminals responsible for more than 50,000 assaults, 2,000 kidnappings, and 1,800 homicides.
Some would have us believe that we in the 34th Congressional District live securely despite the work of ICE and Border Patrol. In fact, we live securely because of the work of ICE and Border Patrol and other local heroes.
