Cuero Cares

Over two years in the making, local leaders from Cuero Cares held their first project this past Saturday, Oct. 26. Through the collaboration of the Texas Rural Leadership Program (TRLP) and the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV), volunteers from DeWitt County partnered to renovate Minnie Hopkins’ home on Crain Street in Cuero.

This house was chosen because of Cuero Cares’ work with CAMAL (Cuero Area Ministerial Alliance) House and their clients.

“She [Hopkins] was selected by the drivers running around and doing their deliveries [for CAMAL House],” Selena Milstead of Cuero Cares said. “They gave us a list of homes that would be in need. This was the one that we chose based on our ability and the kind of work that needed to be done on it.”

Volunteers came together from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to paint, calk, scrap and do exterior work at Hopkins’ home.

“It means so much to me, because it was so much that I wasn’t getting done that I couldn’t get done,” Hopkins said. “I appreciate it so much.”
