Former Yorktown High School exchange student visits host family after 30 years

After 30 years, Flavia Oliveira, a former Yorktown High School foreign exchange student from Brazil, recently visited Yorktown and her host parents, Lupe and Danny Martinez; Oliveira arrived on Friday, Jan. 17, bringing along her daughter, Luiza. Lupe, Flavia and Luiza visited Yorktown High School on Friday, and sat down for a quick interview.
“I applied for an exchange student program back in the 90’s,” said Flavia, “we didn’t choose the place [we went], the program assigned us to the towns and cities. So, I was assigned here– I think Lupe chose me.”
Lupe explained that she saw her photo and name through the exchange student program, and decided to pick her because her husband’s aunt had the same name.
Flavia attended Yorktown High School as a foreign exchange student from January to June in 1990, and has remained close with her former host family, even flying back to Texas to attend Lupe’s daughter’s wedding in San Antonio in 1998.
“I decided to come back now to show [Luiza] the town where I stayed and the family that was so good for me and the school,” said Flavia, “She’s now in high school, and she wants to proceed her studies in the United States.” Looking at the recent renovations, along with previous renovations and additions to YHS, Flavia admitted that many things have changed since her last visit to Yorktown.
“But, I remember a lot– the teachers, and I still have the year book, and I still have a few friends on Facebook that were my colleagues back then.” Lupe and Flavia picked up right where they left off many years ago in Yorktown, and look to have plenty more years of friendship.
