Wildcats close out the Hornets

The Yorktown team traveled to El Campo in a much-anticipated matchup with the Louise Hornets. Each team was battling to be named district runner-up. The hype around these two teams facing off did not disappoint, as it was an exciting game from kickoff until the final seconds ticked off the clock.

The Hornets drove downfield and scored on their opening drive, while the Wildcats were prevented from scoring after getting into the red zone. The Hornet’s strategy included letting the time tick down each possession to less than ten seconds before snapping the ball, as they hoped to not allow the Wildcat offense time on the field. The first period concluded with the Wildcats trailing 0-7.

With 4:30 left in the second quarter, Drew Alexander and De’Quan Clay connected on a 23-yard passing touchdown to tie up the game. Both players had big contributions in the final outcome, as Clay would lead the team with 146 receiving yards for the night.

The Hornets regained the lead by recovering a fumble in the endzone with just under two minutes in the half left to play. The Wildcats started their last drive with 1:45 on the clock, marching down the field and eventually scoring with 40 seconds left, when Alexander and Kalen Barefield linked up on a 14-yard pass. The extra point failed. The Hornets tried and kicked a field goal at the end of the period, but it failed. The Yorktown team was down by one at the conclusion of the half in this nail-biter.

The third quarter got off to an exciting start as the Wildcats scored almost immediately. Alexander hurled his longest throw of the night into the hands of Cesar Sarmiento as they connected on a 60-yard touchdown pass to take over the lead of the game. They extended their lead when Barefield rushed three yards into the endzone. However, with 2:35 left in the quarter, the Hornets returned a fumble to bring the score to 27-21.
