Football season is nearly here, and that means the Gobbler band is hard at work preparing another halftime show. Following the departure of Brian Black, Cuero ISD director of band Rick Varela now has a new assistant, Garrett Laird.
A native of Leander, Laird’s career in band started in sixth grade on trombone.
“It just interested me, because it seemed like the thing everyone was doing,” Laird recalled.
He later switched to euphonium and stayed in band all through high school, growing a passion for music along the way.
Laird went to Blinn College with an initial interest in engineering but soon switched to music education, knowing he had a passion for that and a good talent for it. He finished at Blinn and went on to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville to finish his Bachelors Degree.
