James Barrie started his firefighting career when he was only 16-years-old. Twenty-two years later, Barrie’s journey has led him to Cuero, where he started as the City’s Fire Chief/Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator June 25.

From his start as a junior fireman, Barrie made his way into emergency medical services right out of high school. He was an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) basic and a firefighter before entering the Texas Fire Academy through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He trained for arson investigation and worked for the Texas Forest Service as a regional fire coordinator in Beeville. Before coming to Cuero, he was a lieutenant for the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office for six years.

“It’s been quite a career,” Barrie said. “I’ve really enjoyed it.”
