Brookshire Brothers coming to Cuero

This next year will bring a new grocery store to Cuero. In 2021, Brookshire Brothers will start work and complete a new store in Cuero, as they mark 100 years of operations in Texas and Louisiana.

Brookshire Brothers, a Lufkin, Texas-based, 100 percent employee-owned grocery chain, will begin construction on a 40,000-square-foot store in the Cuero Retail Plaza, along U.S. Highway 183. The announcement was made official yesterday, Dec. 21.

Effective Jan. 1, 2021, Brookshire Brothers assumes the lease of two large vacant retail spaces, located at 1161 N. Esplanade. Plans are currently underway to combine the two storefronts to create a unique shopping experience that will include many of Brookshire Brothers’ signature features and services. Construction will begin in the spring of 2021 with a projected completion date in early fall 2021.

“Brookshire Brothers is a community-driven organization committed to providing exceptional food and the highest level of quality customer service,” John Alston said, President/CEO of Brookshire Brothers. “With this new venture, we look forward to working with and serving the people of DeWitt County for many years to come.”

Additionally, at the Dec. 14 Cuero Development Corporation (CDC) regular board meeting, the board voted to approve a grant application submitted by Brookshire Brothers through the Enterprise Program in the amount of $150,000. The approved appropriation will now go to a public hearing on the expenditure followed by two Cuero City Council readings.

“With the many challenges that our community has had to face in the last year, the CDC Board of Directors has been consistent in its commitment to being proactive and attentive to the needs of our local businesses, as well as to the recruitment efforts it takes to bring new commerce and jobs to Cuero,” Bobby Seiferman said, CDC executive director. “These efforts take a team, and we are always appreciative of a City Council, Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Program that shares that vision for Cuero. Assisting Brookshire Brothers in its location efforts to Cuero is a component of that commitment.”

Founded in 1921, this regional grocery chain operates 116 locations that stretch west to the Texas Hill Country and east to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Though its focus remains on traditional grocery and pharmacy, Brookshire Brothers has complimentary formats that include fuel and tobacco operations. Brookshire Brothers is committed to quality and service in stores and is known for its good food and good people doing good deeds in the communities they serve.
