Community mourns loss of city administrator

Yorktown City Administrator John Barth was found dead this afternoon, Oct. 29, in Yorktown from a gunshot wound. The gun was recovered at the scene near Barth according to the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time it is still under investigation. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate and process all of the evidence. We do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community,” said DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Garoni.

With Barth being a city official the Sheriff’s Office is consulting with the Texas Rangers said Garoni.

When asked about Barth, Yorktown Mayor Bill Baker said, “This is a tremendous loss for Yorktown. John did everything in his power to make Yorktown a better place. He loved his city. He felt it was his duty to make things as good as possible for this community.

“John had an excellent work ethic and amazing relationships with all of his co-workers. This truly is a huge and devastating loss for Yorktown.”

Barth started working for the City of Yorktown as the City Administrator in February of 2017.
