DeWitt County Row Crops Tour set for Tuesday, June 20 at park pavilion

The DeWitt County Row Crops Committee will be hosting their annual Crops Tour on Tuesday, June 20. The program will begin at 3 p.m. at the City Park Pavilion in Yorktown. Registration will be between 2-3 p.m. Following the Tour Stops the program will conclude at Gruenau Hall, eight miles north of Yorktown off of FM 108.

After a welcome and overview at the Yorktown City Park Pavilion, the Tour will begin with the first stop being at the Joseph Respondek Farm to view and discuss the Grain Sorghum Hybrid Test Plot. The Tour will then proceed to the Ben Hahn Farm to demonstrate the use of drones to evaluate crop damage. This demonstration will be conducted by Brian Yanta, Goliad County Ag Extension Agent. Later on at the Gruenau Hall, Brian will give a program on “Using Drones in Agricultural Operations”. The third and final stop will be at the Fred and Chad Hahn Farm to view and discuss the Corn Hybrid Test Plot.

Anthony Netardus, DeWitt County Ag Extension Agent, will be the moderator at the three stops, with guest speakers at the row crop stops being Dr. Josh McGinty, AgriLife Extension Agronomist; Dr. Robert Bowling, AgriLife Extension Entomologist; and corn and grain sorghum seed representatives. After the three Tour stops, the Tour will then proceed to the Gruenau Hall, where there will be a few brief programs prior to the drone program. An FSA program update will be presented by Grady Kelley, DeWitt County Farm Service Agency Director, and an NRCS program update will be presented by Wynne Whitworth Natural Resource Conservation Service Director. Also, Carl Bowen, De-Witt County Sheriff, will give a program on “Practices for Reducing Farm & Ranch Theft.”

The Row Crops Tour is sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service of DeWitt County, DeWitt County Row Crops Committee, and Yorktown Chamber of Commerce &Agriculture. Row Crops Committee members are Carroll Blank, Ben Hahn, Michael Chumchal, Carl Blank, Joseph Respondek, and Chad Hahn. The Program will conclude with the traditional sausage supper at the Gruenau Hall at approximately 6:30 - 7 p.m. There will be a $5 per person fee charged. There will be three CEU’s offered for private, commercial and non-commercial applicators license holders.
