A leader in her school and in the community, Cuero Junior High School sixth grade student Hazelynn Hahn was nominated to attend the Lone Star Leadership Academy this summer by her English and reading teacher, Jana Gray. The week-long trip will include stops at the Texas State Capitol, Texas State Cemetery, Supreme Court of Texas, Natural Bridge Caverns and The Alamo.
“I was super happy when I found out,” Hazelynn said looking back on receiving the news from her teacher.
The steep price of $995 to attend the camp initially worried her, but soon family, church members and community supporters stepped in to help.
Hahn and her mother, Jennifer Hahn, wrote a letter, and the overwhelming following, as Hazelynn stated.
“My mom started writing this letter out to the family members,” she said. “On that Sunday, we went to church, and I made a speech. I really wanted to go to the camp, I was so scared that I couldn’t.”
Joy quickly overcame her, as people from her church donated after asking for support one Sunday morning.
