The Cuero Record
Cuero’s own Lt. Cecil Newman, Jr. paid the ultimate sacrifice, defending his nation during the Korean War in 1950. Once each year, Veterans Day is held to remember and thank those who have served and are serving.
This year, the Cuero Heritage Museum and DeWitt County Historical Museum partnered. CHM presented “A Tribute to Cecil Newman, Jr.,” written and produced by board member Steve Waldrop. DCHM presented Dr. Richard McCaslin, a TSHA Endowed Professor of Texas History at the University of North Texas, who spoke on the effects of World War I in Texas.
The day’s events concluded with a graveside ceremony at Hillside Cemetery with Newman’s family and friends in attendance.
Congressman Filemon Vela of the 34th District of Texas, representing DeWitt County, took part in the special event.
