In January 1967, Texas Press Association (TPA) honored Allen Ludden as Texan of the Year at their Mid-Winter Convention. TPA members attending the convention were especially thrilled. Why, you ask? Because he brought his wife, Betty White, with him to San Antonio for the event.

Both were pictured with the award on the cover of The Texas Press Messenger that was published following the convention in February 1967. The caption for the cover photo read:

“Former Texan, one of television’s top personalities, and now TPA’s Texan of the Year for 1967, is Allen Ludden who takes top billing on the cover of this issue of your magazine. Well, almost. It’s difficult for anyone, however famous, to outshine his beautiful wife, Betty White, who is pictured with him. Both of the Luddens were on hand in San Antonio where he received the annual award at the Texan of the Year Banquet.”

Ludden was born in Wisconsin, moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, when he was nine years old with his family. He was a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin.
