Following a devastating defeat at the hands of Pleasanton last Tuesday night, the Lady Gobblers bounced back with a straight sets win over San Antonio Brooks Academy three days later (25-7, 25-11, 25-13). Cuero improved to 4-4 in district with four matches remaining.
“We just came out on Tuesday night a little more flat than we needed to and dug ourselves a hole really quickly in all three sets,” coach Whitney Coles recalled. “We battled back. Against a good team like that, same exact thing the first time we played them, as far as giving them too much. That just comes down to minimizing our mistakes and making sure that we’re playing smart volleyball.”
Against Brooks Academy, Coles challenged her team with taking care of errors in serve-receive and on defense.
“Those are the two things that kind of hurt us on Tuesday,” she said. “I thought they really did a good job tonight of coming back and really concentrating on the things we said we were going to concentrate on.”
There looks to be a heavily contested finish for the final two playoff spot in their district between Cuero, Pleasanton and Gonzales.
“Our district race is really tight,” Coles said.
