Back-to-back district 15-4A champions

Seeding in the 2017 4A-Division II Texas football playoffs was already secured, when Cuero met Wharton last Friday night, but there was still business to complete. The Gobblers capped off their second straight outright district championship and undefeated regular season with a 68-8 win over the Tigers.

“Our defense is playing really good,” head coach Travis Reeve said of one of the state’s top units which only allowed 24 throughout district and pitched three shutouts. “You have to play great on defense if you want to have a championship football team. For the first time this year, we can say this football team is a championship football team. We are undefeated district champs for the second year in a row. That’s extremely hard to do. It’s a great accomplishment for our kids. It’s happened because of their hard work. Certainly, the Lord’s blessed us. I’m really excited for our kids and what they’ve achieved.”
