If there is such thing as a playoff rival, Geronimo Navarro (11-1) certainly fits the bill of late for the Cuero Gobblers (11-0). The two Region IV powers will meet for the fifth consecutive season Friday night at 7:30 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio with a trip to the state quarterfinals on the line.

Cuero had won three straight over the Panthers dating back to the area round in 2013, before Navarro officially made it a rivalry with last season’s quarterfinal win, 35-21.

Time of possession, penalties and fourth down conversions told most of the story in last season’s meeting. Even though the Gobblers outgained Navarro, 316 to 243, the Panthers had the ball for 9.5 more minutes, had eight less penalties and were seven for seven on fourth down. Cuero failed on their one attempt.
