Following an undefeated, 4-0 mark in non-district, which included two rivalry wins, Cuero has their sights set on district. The Gobblers were champions of District 15 last season, finishing 5-0, but an improved district awaits them.
During Cuero’s non-district wins over Yoakum (41-13), Floresville (52-14), Gonzales (60-21) and Columbus (62-7), the Gobblers accounted for 432 yards per game, while holding the opposition to just over 200 yards on average.
“I was really pleased with how we performed in non-district,” head coach Travis Reeve said. “We started off with a big game against Yoakum after having a couple weeks off because of the hurricane. I thought our kids really responded well to that, kinda got us off to a good start.”
After a couple slow starts against Floresville and Gonzales, the Gobblers set the tone early on the road against the Columbus Cardinals.
“I was really pleased with how we finished against Columbus,” Reeve noted. “One of the things we wanted to do was get off to a fast start, cleaned up some areas that we hadn’t put four quarters together in. I thought we did that against Columbus, and it was a fitting way to finish off the non-district schedule.”
The five-team district slate will start with the Sweeny Bulldogs (2-2) at home, a team Cuero narrowly defeated last season, 21-18.
