Over a century in the making, DeWitt County rivals Cuero and Yoakum will meet for the 109th time Friday night at 7:30 at Bulldog Stadium. Despite the graduation of the Moore brothers for Yoakum (Josh and Jordan) and Bralen Taylor for Cuero, all who went to Division I schools in Texas, there are still playmakers abounding on both sidelines.

In Cuero’s opening game of 2017, Yoakum’s second, the Gobblers were simply too much for the Bulldogs. Cuero won, 41-13, and Jordan Whittington, now a senior, was unstoppable all night. He scored five of his team’s six touchdowns with 14 rushes for 148 yards and four scores on the ground and five receptions for 105 yards and another touchdown through the air en route to being named Ford’s 4A Player of the Week. Graduate Jaden Williams also scored on a 15-yard reception.

This season marks the 14th meeting between Cuero and Yoakum over the past 13 seasons. In 2014, they met for the only time in school history in the postseason with Yoakum earning the win. Overall, the Gobblers have won nine of the last 13 contests and three-in-a-row.

The Bulldogs are coming off of a 13-2 season, where they advanced to the state semifinals. Eleven players return for coach Bo Robinson’s varsity squad, including six on offense and two on defense.

Returners Hagen Garvin and Holden Lauer both saw considerable time under center for the Bulldogs in 2017, combining for 1,289 and 19 touchdowns. Running back Montreal Jones accounted for 277 yards and two touchdowns. A potent offensive line will lead the way with Conner Brandt, Joey Dominguez and Trey Smith.

Yoakum is projected to finish second in district 14-3A DI behind Goliad and ahead of Hallettsville, Edna, Luling and Vanderbilt Industrial. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football predicts Yoakum and Goliad to meet in the state semifinals with Goliad coming out on top.
