Editor’s Note: Thirty years have already passed since Cuero High School’s last state championship in football in 1987. In honor of that historic season, The Cuero Record will have stories throughout this season.
Rodney Pedraza was a three-year starter for the Gobblers during three consecutive trips to the state championship from 1985-1987. He started at linebacker as a sophomore, then played fullback, linebacker and most special teams as a junior and senior.
“We took a butt kickin’ in the first one,” Pedraza recalled of the 1985 state finals. “The second one felt like we had a much better chance at that one.”
Cuero lost, 47-22, to Daingerfield in 1985, then fell to Jefferson, 24-0, in 1986.
