Pitching propels Gobblers

The Cuero Record
This past Saturday, the Cuero Gobblers baseball team put definitive touches on an Area Championship with a crushing 12-0 defeat of the Sinton Pirates. After defeating Sinton on Friday night by a score of 4-2, Cuero was looking to close out the best of three series as quickly and as soundly as possible. They did so in extraordianry fashion.
The first inning provided a slow start to the game as each team looked for signs of their opponents game plan. When the second inning began, Cuero struck first and never looked back.
Gobbler pitcher Michael Barta put on a clinic for the struggling Sinton team. Though the Cuero fielders provided a flawless performance when Sinton managed to make contact, Barta gave the Pirates little chance with strike after strike.
At the plate, Cuero would give the Sinton coaching staff fits as they ran through their lineup at least twice during the top of the fourth inning alone. When the Gobbler bats were not busy hitting singles and doubles to the gap in both left and right, the Pirates pitching staff walked Cuero batters with the bases loaded to provide easy runs for the Gobblers.
Throughout the game, Sinton would try three different pitchers with each fairing no better than the last. Though Cuero would claim the win 12-0, it was a short day as they only took five innings to dash Sinton’s comeback hopes.
“I’m proud of the excellent job these boys did,” stated Coach Phil Schwarz after his victory huddle with the team. “They got the job done quick in two games. On to regionals.”
Barta, who seemed unaccustomed to the limelight, stated “I’m ready for the next round. We have a great team. We all pitched in to help and win.”
The Gobblers will face off against Devine in the regional quarterfinals Thursday at 7 and Friday at 5 in Marion.
