The Cuero Record
Editor’s Note: Thirty years have already passed since Cuero High School’s last state championship in football in 1987. In honor of that historic season, The Cuero Record will have stories throughout this season with players and coaches from 1987.
Robert Strait was a junior running back for the Gobblers back in 1987. He had been on the team the previous seasons, when they had made runs to the state finals but came up short.
Strait started by stating,” Cuero is a football town. We’re known everywhere for football. State championships are not easy to come by. The 70s teams did it, and they sort of made it look easy with their 44 game win streak. It took us another 13 years to do it again. With the years it took to do it and all the dedication, practice, hard work to win it, it made it very special.”
