   DeWitt-Lavaca Special Education Co-op will present a  parent education event on Thursday, May 24. The event will be held at Lifeway Baptist Church on 403 E. Sarah St. in Cuero.
   Check in and lunch will be at noon. The program will begin at 12:30 p.m.
   Guest speaker Brenda Nelson, regional coordinator for Partners Resource Network-TEAM Project, will present “Understanding the ARD Process.” The presentation will provide an overview of the ARD process so that parents will be prepared to participate at every stage of the process. Meyer re-elected Cuero mayor

   City and Cuero ISD elections concluded Saturday at the DeWitt County annex as 2,603 votes were cast for mayor, District 2 councilman, District 3  councilman and two school board trustees.
   Out of 11,811 registered voters in the county, 2,613 participated in the election.
   Sara Post Meyer will serve another two years as Cuero mayor. Meyer received 761 votes. She received 551 early votes and 210 votes on election day.

Animal shelter construction could begin soon

   Construction of a new City of Cuero animal shelter could begin as soon as the end of this month, according to City Manager Raymie Zella.
   City council awarded the construction contract Weaver & Jacobs Construction at the May 7 special meeting. Weaver & Jacobs’ bid was $309,000.
   The site of the new facility is off Farm-to-Market Road 766 near the Stevenson Prison Unit.
   “The contractor will have 150 days to complete once we give notice to proceed,” Zella said. “We should give notice to proceed by end of the month.”

Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum launches $2.1 million campaign

   The board of directors of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum announced a $2.1 million capital campaign at their biennial Taste of the Trail fundraiser held on April 2.
   The campaign is targeted primarily for completing the build-out of the museum’s exhibits on the 4,000-square-foot ground floor of Cuero’s historic Knights of Pythias Hall. The goal of the silent phase of the campaign was to raise between 25 to 30 percent of the $2.1 million by the April 21 fundraiser, but support for the project far surpassed expectations and approximately 65 percent of the $2.1 million target

CCH holds groundbreaking for new chapel, expansion

   Cuero Community Hospital celebrated a groundbreaking for the construction of the Hamilton-Wallis Chapel and expansion of Volunteer Services on Thursday.
   Approximately 70 people, including apron-clad volunteer members, gathered on the lawn at the entrance of the hospital where new construction will begin in approximately two weeks.
   CCH Hospital Board President Amy Crain was the Master of Ceremo-nies. Crain welcomed guests and introduced Darryl Stefka, CCH Hospital Administrator.    The 2012 Miss Cuero Pageant, held by the Cuero Chamber of Commerce, entertained a standing-room-only crowd at the Cuero High School cafeteria Saturday night.
   Eight girls from the community were chosen to receive titles. The honor of Miss Cuero went to Brandy Cole. Cassidy Blackwell was selected as first runner-up.
   Kelsey Newmann earned the title of Junior Miss Cuero. Kaelen Sievers was selected as first runner-up.
   Sophia Davis earned the title of Young Miss Cuero. Gabrielle Jalufka was selected as first runner-up.

Wounded Warriors treated to day of shooting by Cuero Gun Club

   The Cuero Gun Club hosted a fundraising Ironman Competition on Saturday to benefit the Wounded Warrior Program.
   Mayor Sara Meyer opened the event welcoming the wounded warriors, veterans and volunteers.
   Cuero Gun Club volunteers were assisted throughout the day by staff members of the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.
   About a dozen from the Wounded Warrior Program participated. Doug Strand of Richmond was one of the Wounded Warriors to attend the event. After enlisting in the Air Force in 1977, Strand served 34 years before retiring in 2010.

Tanker truck rolls over near Nordheim

   A PICO tanker truck rolled over Tuesday morning on State Highway 72 west of Nordheim near the intersection of Gilbert Mueller Road. 
   The driver of the truck was uninjured.
   According to the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office, the driver was following another vehicle that attempted a turn. The driver failed to see the brake lights on the vehicle and lost control of the truck while attempting to avoid the vehicle.
   The Nordheim Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene.
Herrington begins work as new Meyersville superintendent

   Tina Herrington officially became the new Meyersville ISD superintdendent on Tuesday.
   Herrington replaces Laura Whitson, who will retire after this school year after serving as superintendent the past 25 years.

Laura Whitson has served as Meyersville ISD superintendent for 25 years.
   MEYERSVILLE - After serving Meyersville ISD for 25 years, superintendent Laura Whitson will retire on Thursday, June 14.
   Her career as an educator started at Samnorwood ISD before she attended college in Abilene. She then taught at Bula ISD for nine years before working at the Region 14 Education Service Center in Abilene for three years. She was an assistant superintendent at Liberty Hill ISD for two years before arriving at Meyersville ISD.
   She said that working in a small community was appealing.

Mineral values expected to double

   Another reminder of how the Eagle Ford Shale is affecting this county was discussed Monday at DeWitt County Commissioner Court’s meeting at the courthouse.
   Preliminary reports on what the county can expect in taxable mineral values for the next budget were reviewed.
   From all indications, it appears mineral values will double from the current year.
   Information from DeWitt Appraisal District shows mineral values (not including real property values) will be up $637 million from the current year. That would place the total mineral values at $1.692 billion.

DeWitt County produced 140 wells in 2011

   DeWitt County ranked sixth out of the 14 Eagle Ford Shale counties in numbers of wells completed in 2011, according to a study released last week by the Center for Community and Business Research at The Univer-sity of Texas at San Anto-nio Institute for Economic Development.
   DeWitt County had 140 wells (105 gas, 35 oil) during 2011. Dimmitt County (304) produced the most wells in the Eagle Ford. Neigboring Karnes County ranked second with 272.

Owens accepts position at Sinton

   Rick Owens, who served as athletics director and head football coach at Cuero during the 2010-12 school years, has accepted a coaching position a Sinton High School.
   Owens' contract was not renewed in January by the Cuero ISD Board of Trustees. He resigned as AD and head football coach to take a position as an assistant principal at Cuero High School.
   Owens' football teams had a 12-10 record in his two sesons. 
   Cuero assistant coach Garet Pustka has also handed in his resgination.

Cuero's Sheppard captures 300-meter hurdles gold

   AUSTIN  - Cuero’s Abby Sheppard wasn’t going to repeat the same mistake Saturday.
   Denied a medal earlier in the day in the 100-meter hurdles after clipping the next-to-last hurdle, Sheppard ran a near-perfect race in the 300 hurdles to win in a time of 43.48 seconds, over a half-second ahead of runner-up Trianna McCalister of Monahans.
   Sheppard, a junior, hit the first hurdle in last year’s Class 3A 300 hurdles and wound up finishing fifth.

Gobblers to face Salado in best-of-three in Austin

   The Cuero Gobblers will play the Salado Eagles in a best-of-three baseball area playoff series beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday at Austin’s Burger Stadium.
   Game 2 will be 7 p.m. Friday at Austin’s Nelson Field. Game 3, if necessary, will be Saturday at noon at Austin’s Nelson field.
   Cuero won its fifth-straight District 28-3A title and received a bye in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
   Salado, the runner-up in District 25-3A, swept Wimberley in last week’s bi-district playoffs by scores of 12-1 and 13-3.

Sheppard set to compete in both hurdles events at UIL state meet

Cuero's Abby Sheppard will head into Saturday's Class 3A 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles at the UIL State Track and Field Championships with two of the fastest qualifying times in both events.
   Cuero’s Abby Sheppard and enters Friday’s and Saturday’s UIL State Track and Field Championships as a favorite to win both Class 3A hurdles events at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
   Sheppard’s regional-winning time of 14.50 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles is tied for the fastest among all qualifiers. Liberty-Eylau’s Alexis Ambures also had a qualifying time of 14.50.
   Sheppard will be running in the sixth lane in the event. Other top qualifers in the 100 hurdles are Monahans’ Trianna McCalister (14.54), and Lampasas’ Catherine Bloomfield (14.56).

Lady Gobblers' comeback bid falls short

The Cuero Lady Gobblers console each other after their 11-7 Class 3A area softball playoff loss to Bandera on Friday.
   CONVERSE - The Cuero Lady Gobblers’ softball season ended Friday night, but not without a fight.
   The Lady Gobblers fell behind the Bandera Bulldogs 8-3 before rallying for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull within 8-7.
   But Bandera’s surprise starting pitcher, Ellen Hevenor shut down the Cuero bats the rest of the way to preserve the Bulldogs’ 11-7 victory.
   “We could have given up, but those girls refused,” Cuero coach Amanda Ulcak said. “They didn’t back down. You saw the heart in this group.”

Lady Gobblers confident heading into game against Bandera

   The Cuero Lady Gobblers refer to it as the "perfect game."
   In their 11-1 run-rule victory over arch-rival Yoakum on April 13, Cuero coach Amanda Ulcak feels the Lady Gobblers played about as flawlessly as they can.
   Ulcak feels the Lady Gobblers will need a similar performance tonight against Bandera (26-10) when the two teams meet at 7 p.m. in a one-game Class 3A area playoff at Converse Judson.

   She was born Dec, 31, 1953 in Cuero to Mazie Mackie Haskin and the late Donrell Pickens.
   She is survived by her sisters, Mary Pickens of Cuero, Lillian Pickens Ellis of Victoria, Laura McKinnon and husband, Freeman, of San Antonio, and Shirley Battles and husband, Lionel, of Victoria; and brothers, Larry Pickens and Don Pickens of Cuero, and Michael Pickens of Houston.
   She was preceded in death by her father and brothers, Floyd Pickens and Sammy Pickens.

   Charles Arthur Lassmann Sr., age 74, of Cuero passed from this life to eternity at 1:25 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2012.
   Charles was born on March 9, 1938 in Victoria County to Carl Oscar and Pearl Brandt Lassmann. Charles attended school in Cuero until 1957 when he joined the United States Army to proudly serve his country from 1957 until 1978 as a Sergeant. He served his tours in Korea and Vietnam.    Isaias M. Renteria, 79, of Cuero passed away Friday, May 4, 2012.
   He was born Aug. 14, 1932 in Waelder to the late Franesca M. and Samuel Renteria. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Army. He was a master carpenter and enjoyed gardening.

   Robert Lee Boston, 64, of Kingsland passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
   He was born April 6, 1948 in San Antonio to Elaine Wilkinson Boston and the late Joe Boston.
   He married Brenda Hicks on December 3, 1974 in San Antonio. Robert served in the United States Army and received outstanding awards for top salesman at Transtar. He enjoyed fishing and barbecuing.
