Guadalupe to rise above flood stage

   The National Weather Service has forecasted the Guadalupe River to rise two feet above the flood stage level north of Cuero due to heavy rains in recent days in the Hill Country.
   "We are forecasting the river to rise near 26 feet by early Saturday morning," NWS meteorologist Pat McDonald said. "It should rise just above the flood stage by late this evening.
   "At 26 feet, it will flood low-lying areas along the left flood plain just above Cuero, which may affect some livestock along the river."

Whataburger to hold pancake breakfast for Relay For Life

   Whataburger in Cuero will be hosting a pancake breakfast to support the Relay For Life of DeWitt County on Saturday, Feb. 25.
   Each guest with a ticket will receive as many pancakes as they can eat (only five will be offered in the drive-through).
   All of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society Realy For Life of DeWitt County.
   Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at Whataburger in Cuero beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1.
   The DeWitt County Relay for Life is scheduled for Friday, April 20. 
Busy intersection gets four-way stoplight

   The Texas Department of Transportation installed a four-way stoplight at the intersection of Esplanade and State Highway 72 on Thursday.
   TxDOT plans to install a full-signal traffic light, pedestrian signals, crosswalks and wheelchair ramps at the intersection.
   The project is expected to be complete in the spring, weather permitting.
   Director of Transportation Operations Marla Jasek, P.E., is in charge of the project and may be reached at 361-293-4356.
Chisholm Trail Museum receives funds from USDA

   Congressman Rubén Hinojosa announced a grant of $45,000 and a loan of $152,000 was awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, Inc. in Cuero.
   The Rural Development funds will be used to improve the parking lot and sidewalks to meet handicap accessible requirements for a public building.

Cuero ISD doesn't know what buyer intends to do with land

   Cuero ISD Superintendent Henry Lind and Cuero ISD school board president B.J. Drehr say they don't know what Charlie Clines of One CC Real Estate in Houston plans to do with the 6.5 acres of property he purchased from the school district for $1.5 million. 
   The school district unanimously approved the sale of the property to Clines at the school board meeting on Jan. 17.

Cuero Police Department hosts K-9 narcotics training

Several area law enforcement agencies came to Cuero on Jan. 18 for police K-9 narcotics training.
   Southern Specialties Transpor-tation and the Cuero Police Department hosted K-9 narcotics training in Cuero on Jan. 18.
   Police narcotic detection K-9 teams from area law enforcement agencies participated in the event. Agencies in attendance were Cuero Police Department, Victoria Police Department, Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office, Victoria County Sheriff’s Office, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, and Goliad County Sheriff’s Office.

Cuero woman helped begin 'Adopt a Grandparent on Valentine's Day'

Jennifer Hahn-Nelson was motivated to start "Adopt a Grandparent for Valentine's Day" after working as a nurse at a nursing home.
   Jennifer Hahn-Nelson was looking for a way to combine the two passions in her life - as a charge nurse for a Cuero nursing home and an independent beauty consultant - with her cousin Jana Guajardo when they devised a solution.
   “Adopt a Grandparent on Valentine’s Day,” is a program that allows area sponsors to donate $10 so that each resident receives hand lotion or body spray and a carnation donated from a local flower shop. Students from John C. French will also make cards and deliver gifts to the residents.

No charges filed yet in French investigation

   No charges had been filed by Monday in the Cuero Police Depart-ment’s investigation of allegations that an occupational therapist at John C.   French Elementary was involved in miscounduct with a 4-year-old student.
   The Cuero PD and Texas Child Protective Ser-vices were still investigating the accusations Monday made on Jan. 9.
   “As you may expect in cases such as we are investigating, it is ex-tremely important that all details be documented,” Lewis said.

Yoakum man facing sexual assault of child charge

   The DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged Jerry Belton Drexler, 44, of Yoakum on suspicion of an aggravated sexual assault of a child.
   Drexler was arrested by DCSO Sgt. Santos Calderon on Tuesday. Drexler is accused of having sexual contact with a child younger than 14 years of age.
   The charge is a first-degree felony and carries a punishment of a minimum of 25 to 99 years in prison due to the age of the victim.
   Drexler is being held in the DeWitt County Detention Center with a bond of $175,000

Truck driver gets citation after rollover Friday

This 2007 Freightliner rolled over Friday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and State Highway 111 after the driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate a turn.
   The intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and State Highway 111 was shut down for a period of time Friday after a tank trailer rolled over and spilled condensate oil.
   Wallace Witham, 51, of China Grove was transported to Yoakum Community Hospital with minor injuries and was cited for unsafe speed, according to the DPS report.
   Witham was headed southbound on U.S. Highway 183 in a 2007 white Freightliner with a 1980 tank trailer belonging to Tierra Transportation LLC of Converse when he failed to negotiate the turn onto State Highway 111 and overturned onto the passenger

Crystal Theatre cast performs at Gaslight Theatre

   The Gonzales Crystal Theatre cast of “Nunsense” gave an encore performance at the Shiner Gaslight Theatre on Jan. 13, 14, and 15. The event was a special fundraiser that benefitted both the Crystal and the Gaslight.

Czech Music Museum to open Feb. 19

   LA GRANGE - The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange has announced its grand opening of The Czech Music Museum of Texas on Sunday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 6 p.m.
   The public is invited.
   The celebration will begin with dedication ceremonies and open house visiting of the museum from 2 to 3 p.m., featuring music by Mark Hermes on the accordion and George Koudelka on drums. Victoria College to be training ground for Key Energy drivers

   Victoria College announced Tuesday that it will train new employee-drivers from Key Energy Services starting this month.
   New employee-drivers for Key’s fluid management division will be trained by VC instructors. Students who successfully complete the program will earn a Commercial Driver’s License.
   “We are happy to send our new drivers to Victoria to receive excellent training, which will not only help improve the skills of employees in our company, but also employ those interested in working with us,” said Dennis Douglas, senior vice president, Fluid Management Services at Key.

Portions of Texas interstate highways to see speed limit increase

   AUSTIN - Miles and miles of Texas highway will soon see speed limit increases following Thursday’s Texas Transportation Commission action approving 75-mph designations for close to 1,500 miles of interstate.
   The speed limit changes span 60 Texas counties making it the largest conversion since a new law was passed last year. The 82nd Texas Legislature passed and the governor signed House Bill 1353, which allows the Texas Department of Transportation to establish 75-mph speed limits on Texas highways providing speed studies show it can be done safely.

   The Yoakum Bulldogs will open the 2012 high school baseball season ranked No. 9 in the Class 3A Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll.
   The Shiner Comanches are ranked No. 2 in Class 1A.
   Corpus Christ Carroll (5A), Corpus Christ Calallen (4A), Robinson (3A), Hughes Springs (2A), and Dodd City (1A) are the top-ranked teams in each classification.

UHV to open baseball season Feb. 3

   The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars baseball team with just six returning starters will opening the 2012 season with a big test on Feb. 3 and 4 in Brownsville.
   The Jaguars will meet the UT-Brownsville Scorpions in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and wrap up the series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
   UTB captured the series last season with a 5-3 mark, but the Jaguars still lead the overall series with a 17-13 record.

   Cuero junior punter Logan Goebel received honorable mention on the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 3A all-state football team that was released Thursday.

   The Cuero eighth-grade girls teams concluded the basketball season Thursday night with a pair of victories over the Poteet eighth-graders.
   Cuero won the A game 26-2 behind Courtney Clark's seven points. The A team finished with an 8-5 record and finished third in district with a 6-4 mark.
   Cuero took the B game 15-6 as Jordan Bures scored six points. The B team finished with a 9-1 record and first in district.

Gobblers roll past Bulldogs 58-47

   Austin Means scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Cuero Gobblers to a 58-47 District 28-3A basketball win over the Yoakum Bulldogs on Tuesday night.
   Means made three 3-pointers in the game. John Aguilar added 14 points for Cuero and D'Anthony Hopkins had 10.
   The win improved the Gobblers to 17-8 overall and 5-2 in 28-3A play. Yoakum fell to 16-13 and 4-3.

   Harmony Isaaclena Perez, the first baby born at Cuero Community Hospital in 2012 was born Jan. 2 at 5:41 p.m.
   She weighed 6 pounds and 4.4 ounces and measured 18 inches long. Her parents are Jerica Ann Ruiz and David Perez of Cuero.

Opportunity Quilt winner

   The winner of the 2011 Opportunity Quilt is Nell Simpson, pictured here with Gaye McNett, guild treasurer.
   Each year, the Heirloom Stitchers Guild of Cuero makes and raffles a quilt. It is the only fundraiser for the organization.
   The guild makes quilts for local CPS, seniors of Bluebonnet Ranch, and tries to see that any person in the area who loses their home to fire receives a quilt. Simpson is a member of the guild.

   Annie Mae Harryman, 89, of Liberty passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012.
   She was born October 2, 1922 in Kenedy to the late John J. and Lydia Fee Hogan.
   She married her late husband Alfred Edward Harryman on July 22, 1939. She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family.
   She is survived by her sons, Willie B. Harryman of Liberty and James Harryman of Victoria; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

   Linda Joyce Barth, a former editor of Houston House & Home Magazine and a joyful aesthete known for her discerning eye for design, architecture and fashion, died on Jan. 21, 2012, after a long battle with cancer, at the rural home of her cousins near Angleton.
   Linda, who also worked in years past for an advertising agency in Denver and wrote for Houston’s city magazine, Houston Metropolitan, became editor of Houston House & Home in 2002.    James William Dieringer, 76, of Cuero passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. 
   He was born Feb. 24, 1935 in Cuero to the late William and Dorothy Lucas Dieringer. 
   He married his late wife Alberta Demmer Dieringer in Yorktown on Nov. 16, 1957. 
   James spent many years working in air conditioning maintenance and retired in 2000 from the Austin State School. He enjoyed travel, woodworking, reading, and listening to music. He treasured his family and 50 years of marriage to his loving wife, Alberta.

   He was born Feb. 18, 1929 in Yorktown to the late Fritz and Bridget Matejek.

   Baby Aaliyah Li’Swan Solomon passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.
   She was born Jan. 13, 2012 to April Marie Olguin and Christopher Solomon.
   She is survived by her parents; maternal grandparents, Mario and Julia Olguin; and paternal grandparents, Lester and Lisa Smith.
